Divine Consign

What a great weekend we had. Saturday, we hosted our first Pricing with the Stars, consignor workshop. We had 83 women attend this information-filled event. Our thanks goes out to our fabulous speaker, Piper Walker, who is one of our top 20 consignors! She did such a fabulous job teaching her fellow consignors all about product presentation, pricing and so much more. We really feel that this group of ladies will all have fantastic sales this season. We know that many of you wanted to come but just couldn't make it. This event was so successful, that we're sure we'll have it again in future seasons.

We have so many consignors who are very successful season after season we thought this would be a great forum for them to share their "secrets" with our newbies. If you're willing, just post a comment to this post with your top tip or a couple of things you think every new consignor should know. Thanks for sharing!

*Save hangers from everything that you purchase and ask your family & friends to save them for you also.
*Punch a hole in the side of the price tag to put the safety pin through instead of pinning directly through the cardstock.
*Get your items ready a little at a time, AHEAD of time.
*Try to keep all the items that you are going to sell in one place.

*When trying to decide on a price for your items, ask yourself honestly
1)"Would I think that price was a bargain?"
2)"Would I purchase this item at this price."
*Don't price items with emotion. Name brands do sell a little higher but, remember that shoppers are looking for bargains.

    * when you go through your kid's clothes to sell at the sale, immediately put them on a wire hanger
    hanger tips:
    * plastic and pants hangers can break. Taking your items off the rack until they can be re-hung
    * coated hangers tend not to slide along the rails... while they won't break, they are harder to deal with.
    * ask your drycleaner for any extra hangers they might have.

    Taping tips:
    * Think about how the tape will come off the items before taping it. Don't ruin a great toy by taping over the stickers.
    * Clear packing tape stays on the item.

    Entering items tip:
    * be consistent in entering your items. Ex. always put brand name in the first line of the item description.
    * remember that your label should describe your item well enough to be matched with it if two become separated.

To save you some frustration, take your items outside and check for stains. Stains that might not show up in your "regular" lighting inside your home will really pop out in flourescent lighting. Natural light will help you spot things you might not otherwise, especially if you are working on your items at night.

    * Whole outfits sell much better than individual pieces, unless it's a wardrobe staple like jeans. I always try to pair bottoms with a top we wore it with.

*Make sure to attach any matching hair bows, socks, etc. for a complete set that will fly off the rack!

My best advise would be to know your market. An example would be that you shouldn' try to sell a circo top (Target) for $5 to $6 dollars as you can buy a new one for the same price. Too many times I see people asking too high of prices for mass produced merchandise. Then there are others on the other side of the spectrum who are trying to recoup the expensive price that they paid for their name brand items. Have realistic expectations. Try to think from the perspective of how much YOU would pay for the item.

Why are we hearing about this after the fact? How do I sign up to hear about events like this before they happen?

All of the info was in the email we sent out to our entire database a few weeks ago. It was also emailed to every consignor who signed up before last Saturday. Make sure you're on our email list by going to our home page and signing up there. That's the best way to keep up with all of the latest info.

I have an entire closet that I've dedicated to Divine Consign. I use it to manage my inventory throughout the year. Here are my tips:

    1) When I pick up my unsold items, I hang them directly in the closet. That way, they stay clean and they're ready to go next time!

    2) As my children outgrow clothes, I go ahead and hang them in that closet. I use one side for fall/winter items and the other side for spring/summer items.

    3) At the same time, I try to enter the clothing information in the inventory (using the off-season consignment manager). Then when the sale opens, I can transfer my items into the consignment and my tags are done!

    4) Not only do I find that making outfits helps items sell, but also putting a few items together to create a mix-and-match wardrobe works wonders. Try putting 2 shirts together with 2 shorts/skirts/scooters, etc. that all mix and match, and you'll find it won't last long (and you can put a little higher price on it for the sheer value of what you're selling).

    5) I also keep a donation bag in the closet for items that I find don't meet Divine Consign's standards. Then my donation items are ready to go, as well!

Please use the correct sizing. Start with the smallest size first such as a size 4 shirt with size 5 shorts.
Also, use correct size safety pins on your items instead of using those super small ones that are so hard to take off and please NO staples in clothes they are a hazard.
I find it easy to gather all my items of the same size and put rubberbands around them to make it easier to put them out on the racks.

Take an iron to those clothes that are really wrinkled, it makes a huge difference.

I have a bin that I put lost pieces to toys, games or puzzles in then try to match it up a little at a time. It is also a quick place to look with I am double cking all pieces are there, I know where to try to look for it.

Please don't try to sell something that isn't complete, like puzzles and games, it is very frustrating to those that buy it. Just think would I be happy if I bought this and it was missing the last piece to the puzzle.
